Environmental officers tasked to enforce environmental laws
In a bid to prevent the flooding disaster that has hit the neighboring districts of Bundibugyo, Kasese, and some parts of Ntoroko, the RDC Kabarole has tasked the environment officers to enforce the environmental laws over wetland encroachment and turning rivers into dumping sites.
Asiimwe condemned the act of people’s encroachment on wetlands in Kabarole district, adding that this could soon result to severe floods especially during rainy seasons as rivers are expected to burst their banks.
Mr. Ruyonga Geoffrey the environmental officer Kabarole district revealed that they are facing a challenge of corrupt enforcement officers who have left their duties.
He added that they have developed a new system of De-silting Rivers in Kabarole so that they avoid the problem flooding.
However, residents of Fort Portal municipality raised concern over the continuous encroachment on wetlands and dumping of garbage in rivers, saying that the habit will soon cause loss of lives.
