Ntoroko district leaders have asked government to find a lasting solution to the floods that usually hit the district leaving several people displaced and their properties destroyed.

The leaders say that government should find means through which the problem of floods can be solved permanently.

According to the leaders, the floods have become a major barrier to development in the district since people are always in the camps after losing all their property to the floods.

Last month, hundreds of people were left displaced after floods hit the sub counties of Butungama and Bweramule leaving houses submerged.

Kasoro William Mukiranya, the Ntoroko district chairperson says the trend of floods in the district has weakened their popularity among the people.

According to him, the locals accuse them for doing nothing as floods ravage their homes.

Kasoro’s staments came shortly after government through the office of the prime minister had just delivered relief food to the district for the flood hit victims.

However, Kasoro described the relief as a just pain killer to the bigger problem that must be solved permanently.

In 2017, government carried out a survey through which it intended to erect barriers on the banks of river Semliki to stop water from flowing to the locals.

However, the plan was never implemented, Annah Mary Tunmwine, the district woman Member of Parliament says government should revive it to save the lives of people in the district.

Edson Rugumayo, the Youth Member of Parliament for Western Uganda who hails from Ntoroko district revealed that government is already looking at a plan intended to prevent flooding in the districts of Ntoroko, Bundibugyo and Kasese.
