The Impact of Women’s Football in Uganda

Karungi’s path is not just about personal glory; it’s a crusade for equality and empowerment. In a country where gender norms have long dictated societal roles, Uganda’s embrace of women’s football signifies progress. The National Equal Opportunities Policy of 2006 paved the way for initiatives promoting inclusivity in sports, challenging deep-seated stereotypes.

The rise of women’s football in Uganda is evident, with FUFA requiring each club in the Uganda Premier League to have a women’s team. This has led to increased opportunities and growth of female talent, challenging traditional stereotypes.

According to Laurence Ssenyomo, assistant coach of the Police Women’s Football Club, the rise of women’s football isn’t just a game changer; it’s a catalyst for social change. “Girls embracing football are on the rise,” Ssenyomo observes, emphasizing its role in providing livelihoods and fostering confidence among young women. ” Beyond the pitch, it instills discipline, reduces crime, and empowers girls to challenge traditional gender roles, contributing significantly to gender equality” he said.

Beyond the Pitch

For Karungi, football is more than a sport; it’s a platform for advocacy and community upliftment. As she envisions her future, she sees herself not only perfecting her skills and leading her team to championships but also taking on a mentorship role. “I want to give back,” she asserts passionately, i see myself  coaching youth players, nurturing their talents, and sharing my  passion for the game”.
