ADOLESCENT GIRLS HAVE TO STAY IN SCHOOLS, TO REDUCE ON RAMPANT HIV INFECTIONS

As one way of reducing the increasing cases of HIV among adolescents in Kabarole district, the public has been urged to keep adolescent girls in school so as to keep them busy.

According to Francis Enywere working as HIV program analyst under the United Nations Population fund, keeping the girl child in school makes her busy by concentrating on her education then she will have no time to get engaged in sexual activities.

Enywere disclosed that the campaign of keeping a girl child in school requires combined effort from all stakeholders such cultural institutions, religious leaders, to start preaching this gospel.

He disclosed that also those who have dropped out from school need to go back to school whether informal or formal so that they can be equipped with skills for a sustainable life.

Mwesige Zebidayo Kaserebe the deputy minister for culture and gender Toro kingdom said that parents used to have enough time for their children, tell them educative stories at fire place as it helped in installing discipline, respect and reduces on sexual engagement at an early age. But currently people turned to copy western culture which has eroded morals.

Kayondo Bashil, the coordinator Uganda Muslim Supreme council for Toro-Bunyoro region observed a need for government to engage all stakeholders in putting more emphasis on sensitizing chairperson lc1’s at village level where all cases of child marriage and defilement occur.
