BY KAJUMBA GORRET– FORT PORTAL
After the kidnap and murder of Kabagambe Aheebwa Japheth the NRM chairman of Ntoroko district who was kidnaped from centenary bank in Fort Portal, police in Fort Portal have today ordered for CCTV cameras installation on banks, petrol stations, big buildings and businesses.
This followed police failing to get pictures of the kidnappers from centenary bank in Fort Portal where they picked the deceased because centenary didn’t have CCTV cameras.
Speaking to journalist today at Rwenzori west regional police offices in Boma Fort Portal City, the Regional Police commander Rwenzori west region Lameck Kigozi said that as police they were challenged by getting criminal’s footages from the CCTV cameras that were installed on Fort Portal streets because the nearest camera to the bank was a beat far from the scene.
If centenary bank had cameras installed outside, it would have eased our work, but finally we managed to get CCTV footages from one of the private installed cameras on the building in the city Mr. Kigozi said
Mr. Kigozi also added that many buildings and businesses in Fort Portal don’t have CCTV cameras and were calling upon the public to take it seriously and install CCTV cameras because it is of their good security and it will ease police’s work incase of such incidents.
He said that people of Ntoroko have been having conflicting information about the cause of death of late Kabagambe saying it was politically motivated.
I want to clear allegations not true because suspects we have arrested admitted having murdered late Kabagambe and their intention was to extort money from him, Kigozi said.
We want the people of Ntoroko to stay calm and justice will prevail as per their request during the burial of the late Kabagambe.
While at the burial of late Kabagambe on Tuesday last week told the ICT minister and the NRM secretary general that Kabagambe’s death was politically motivated due to political conflicts in the district.
Mr. Kakwezi Geoffrey a friend to the deceased told mourners at the burial that, the late on several occasions has been telling me that he has been receiving threatening messages that politically based to kill him and he has been telling me that anytime one of us may die and we have to be careful, Kakwezi said.
The wife of deceased Ms Evelyn Kabagambe also demanded justice for her fallen husband and said security needed to work hard and see the assailants are arrested and prosecuted.
“I pray that the kidnappers and killers of my husband be arrested, the church leaders should pray for us and have justice,” She said
While at the burial the ICT minister Hon. Chris Baryomunsi said that CCTV cameras will be expanded to other places remaining to enable easy investigations in crimes.
Hon. Baryomunsi also called upon the public to stay calm and don’t take the laws in their hands in a way of revenge, let’s give time to security to investigate the matter conclusively.
As of today, three suspects of Alleluiah Banabasi, Herbert Mutamba and Ahimbisibwe were arrested pending to be taken to courts of law.
Yesterday a team from Homicide Kampala together with suspects in tight security reconstructed the scene in Fort Portal.
