Students are in fear of dead year due to COVID 19
As one way of curtailing the spread of COVID 19 in Uganda, president Museveni in March this year directed all schools, tertiary institutions and universities to close.
As a result over 15 million school going children in Uganda are currently at home following the closure of schools.
10.7 million Pupils are in primary schools, 2 million in pre primary schools, 2million students in secondary schools and 314,548 students in universities and tertiary institutions.
Now many students are worried of a likelihood of unprecedented dead year in their studies if the closure of education institutions continues for the next four months.
Some the students interviewed by our reporter yesterday said that the system of learning through radios and televisions is not sustainable since they are not given enough time to learn at home and that money to buy dry cells is always scarce due to the lockdown.
Others said that TVS are only favorable for urban duelers because those in upcountry cannot access power.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ennoce a primary teacher at Smart nursery and primary school said that the system of television and radio teaching will not cater for all students as there are two categories of learner’s slow and quick.
He asked government either to make a dead year or put other means of teaching children by reopening the schools and tighten measures.
Meanwhile,Nyakahuma John a senior four student at Dream high school Geme, if schools are allowed to open ,they should be lenient to the parents on issues of school fees as parents have not been working.
