Vot’s Mujungu Betty wins national award for elderly rights’ protection

Voice of Toro’s Betty Mujungu Pendo, has won a national award for her outstanding efforts and contribution towards raising awareness on older persons’ rights and their protection.
Through her 13 episodes radio play code named “The Sunset of Life” literally translated as Akairirizi kobwomezi, Mujungu who doubles as Voice of Toro’s content development team leader intended to address the plight of older persons ranging from Neglect, sexual abuse, land grabbing, loneliness among others, all based on true stories from interviews with older persons in homes and community groups.
She received the award at the National celebrations of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at Grand Imperial Hotel Kampala.
The award for the winner in radio category was presented to Mujungu by the Minister of state for Elderly affairs Hon. Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu at the function that was organized by the ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development in conjunction with Help Age International.

Minister re-echoed government’s commitment to care for welfare of older persons through programs like SAGE, and now the special Enterprise Grant for Older Persons SEGOP that is designed for older persons between 61-79 years of age and so far 5,400 older persons have been registered to benefit from this new program.
In her words Betty, thanked the Ministry of Gender and all other civil society organizations that are advancing the rights and social protection of older persons in communities.
Miss Mujungu is known for her creative art and educative plays written in different themes with the most outstanding being her play ‘‘Enu Eriba Nsi?’’ that is prescribed and examined by the ministry of education and sports in the Uganda curriculum for A level (UACE) Runyoro – Rutooro literature for schools in Bunyoro and Tooro sub regions.
